Lestercast were the first Investment Casting company to employ the services of Premier Autoclaves Service & Solutions Ltd to fully support their critical autoclave equipment on site.

Recently during a scheduled service visit it was noted on day two of our service that the boiler section of their autoclave had pitted internally. On review of this by the insurance inspectors it was deemed that the autoclave would need repairing before it could be released back to production.

As we were on site already servicing the clave and being sympathetic to their current situation Premier Autoclaves leapt into action to help Lestercast out of a very production critical situation.

As a service contracted customer it allowed Lestercast the added authority to influence our current service schedule to accommodate their immediate needs.

Springing into action we arranged for the pitted areas to be re-welded on day three by a qualified and certified coded welder. This work was witnessed in full by Lestercast’s own notified insurance body for approval of our works. Our engineers stayed on site following this work and prepped the autoclave for a full on site hydro-test on day four.

On day four the autoclave was fully hydro tested on site and witnessed once more by their notified insurance body. This was then approved and the autoclave finally signed off for production use.

Our engineer re-built the system that very same day and completed full functionality tests before handing it back to Lestercast production staff.

In all from start to finish, from the autoclave boiler being condemned to re-approved for production it took a total of 48hours to successfully complete.

Global Technologies Racing have recently awarded Premier Autoclaves Service & Solutions with a contract to supply them with a brand new complete control suite for their large 2.5mtr diameter LBBC autoclave on site.

Global technologies Racing or ‘GTR’ as they are known are one of the UK’s largest manufacturers of carbon fibre composite components for the composites industry.

The new control upgrade is part of the wider company plans to update and expand on their current autoclave capacity and technology bringing them up to date with the latest autoclaves and control software.

We have recently been awarded a new contract to supply Retrac Composites with front end control software upgrades on all 3 autoclave systems on site.

The order to upgrade all 3 autoclaves on site to a common control platform really does give Retrac the edge in terms of autoclave control and functionality. Some of the new features will allow Retrac improved cycle control of both temperature and pressure in Ramp Dwell and Cooling phases by utilising segment by segment thermal head ratio programming and control.

Common control systems also allow for operators to specialise in one system giving greater cover in times of annual leave or absence ensuring customer requirements are met on time and in full.

This contract cements the confidence in the market of our software package being the best in cost effective and ultra modern autoclave control.

Cobham Composite Technologies: Retro-fitting of an autoclave forced cooling system.

We were employed by Cobham, a world leader in the design development and production of composite structures and radomes for the aerospace and defence markets, to retro fit forced cooling to their large autoclave at their Shepshed facility.

The need for forced cooling was apparent due to the pressing requirement for a higher production yield from their large autoclave.

We had fitted a new cooling system to their medium autoclave back in 2010 and with the success and increased throughput of this autoclave Cobham Advanced Composites had decided to adopt the same system and cooling principal to the large autoclave.

Forced cooling is the process of introducing water, at ambient temperature, in to an internally mounted heat exchanger at the end of a dwell segment. Instead of leaving the autoclave to cool naturally at the end of the dwell segment, forced cooling is the process of actively pumping water through an internal heat exchanger from a dedicated cooling system at a regulated flow rate to accurately control the cooling of the autoclave and product.

This forced cooling action therefore helps to speed up autoclave cure cycles on the cool segment allowing greater throughput to meet with increasing production demands.

With the growth seen by Cobham this year we were under pressure to supply the system quickly.

From order placement to installation, commissioning and final sign off the project took 8 working weeks to complete and incorporated internal and external autoclave modifications along with the supply of a dedicated cooling system.
